Joseph Fine Art School
“Although we were both born and raised in China — 黃曉勤 in Nanjing and 閻倬𡖖 in Xuzhou — today in California we are known as Janny Huáng and Joseph Yán. Here we have painted, taught, and practiced calligraphy since the 1980s. ➤
➤ We both graduated from and taught in noted art institutes in Nanjing, China — Janny at the Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Painting Institute, and Joseph at the Nanjing University of Arts. In addition, Joseph holds a degree from the Academy of Art University of San Francisco. Our work has been exhibited and collected internationally.
In 1992 we opened our first school for traditional Chinese art — Joseph Fine Art School and Gallery — on Clement Street in San Francisco. Over the next 23 years at that location we helped hundreds of students learn to express their artistic imaginations and styles through traditional Chinese visual arts. Each New Years we held a large exhibition of student artworks from the prior year and celebrated with a big party. The eminent educator Herbert Kohl discovered our school and wrote about his own experiences as a student with us in a delightful little book entitled Painting Chinese (2007).
We are extremely proud of the work produced by all our students over the years, by their sound technique, their personal creativity, and their acquisition of an appreciation of the beauty and meaning of Chinese art and calligraphy.
In 2015 we closed our San Francisco school and retired to our home studio in Daly City, California, our “Pine Studio” (Tīng Sōng Yuán, 聽松園), which we named after the large pine tree in our garden. Following the ancient tradition of identifying where an artwork was made, we often stamp a finished painting with our Pine Studio chop.
We currently do not accept new students, but we hope you will enjoy the art which you find on this website.”
