Huáng Xiǎo Qín (黃曉勤), “Janny”
Huáng has worked as a professional painter since 1982, residing and working in California since 1989. In each new piece, she works to achieve a sense of poetry, peace, and refinement. ➤
➤ A native of Nanjing, China, Huáng’s talent was noticed early. She graduated from the Jiangsu Academy of Traditional Chinese Painting in 1982 and subsequently joined the faculty. In 1989 Huáng moved to San Francisco, California, where she joined her husband Yán Zhūo Qīng (閻倬𡖖, “Joseph”), who had been attending the Academy of Art University. Together they established the Joseph Fine Art School and Gallery on Clement Street in San Francisco. Over their 23 years in that location they taught art to hundreds of students of all ages. Huáng continues to teach in their Pine Studio School in Daly City, California.
As an artist, Huáng is particularly noted for her detailed brushwork in the traditional category of “bird and flower” painting (huāniǎo huà 花鳥畫 ) as well as for her calligraphy. Earlier in her career, Huáng traveled widely in China and painted members of many minority groups, which she rendered in a stylized figurative manner. Her current artwork focuses primarily on subjects from nature. She pairs much of her work with calligraphed poems and sayings. Huáng has exhibited her work both in California and internationally. Her paintings can be found in both private and public collections.
